How to be Happy Every Day
I love learning and growing, and my ‘go to’ for inspiration at the moment is YouTube.
While recently exploring this platform, I came across the heading “How to be Happy Every Day” on TEDx Talks. It seemed to jump OUT of the screen, and I felt compelled to watch it.
Well, what an inspirational message from an amazing woman called Jacqueline Way whose aim was, to teach her children how to be happy every single day.
Her message was simple: Develop a daily giving habit — one person, one give, one day at a time.
We all know that 'giving' is a nice thing to do. But do you know the neuro-science behind giving?
Helping others triggers a release of oxytocin, which has the effect of boosting your mood and counteracts the effects of cortisol (the stress hormone). When oxytocin is boosted, so are serotonin and dopamine! Dopamine, serotonin, and oxytocin make up the Happiness Trifecta. Any activity that increases the production of these neuro-chemicals will cause a boost in your happiness.
But the benefits don’t stop at moods! Serotonin is connected to sleep, digestion, memory, learning, and appetite. Dopamine is connected to motivation and arousal. When oxytocin begins to flow, blood pressure decreases and the foundation for sexual arousal is built. Bonding increases, social fears are reduced and trust and empathy are enhanced. Oxytocin is also an anti-inflammatory and reduces pain and enhances wound healing.
So, if giving allows us to secrete all the chemicals at once, we owe it to ourselves to give as often as possible!
What made Jacqueline's presentation so powerful, was her encouraging 'giving' as a daily practice. I'm sure you've heard the common myth that it takes 21 days to form a new habit, but that's not entirely correct. The truth is that it takes anywhere from two to eight months to build a new behavior into your life — not 21 days.
Jacqueline sat down with her 3 year old son created and a list of 'giving' ideas, one small thing to help people, animals and the environment which was implemented one day at a time.
